Jigawa strengthens community policing through traditional institution

Jigawa Government Reaffirms Commitment to Community Security Partnerships

DUTSE, Nigeria — The Jigawa State Government has reiterated its resolve to enhance collaboration with traditional institutions and community leaders to foster trust and cooperation in security initiatives statewide.

Governor Umar Namadi conveyed this message during the opening of a two-day paper presentation and interactive session for participants of Senior Course 48 from the Armed Forces Command and Staff College at the Sir Ahmadu Bello Hall. He was represented by Deputy Governor Engineer Aminu Usman.

Usman emphasized the importance of community engagement in addressing contemporary security challenges, stating that defense strategies could no longer rely solely on military efforts.

“The state government has been actively strengthening partnerships with traditional rulers and community leaders to build public trust, enhance intelligence gathering, and promote peaceful coexistence,” Usman said. He also noted the significance of grassroots involvement in security initiatives.

The governor highlighted that through community policing structures and intelligence-sharing mechanisms, Jigawa has managed to maintain relative peace and stability. This stability, he noted, allows the government to focus on development across sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and economic empowerment.

Namadi pointed out that the theme of the study tour, “Promoting Community Engagement for National Security and Prosperity,” aligns with the current realities facing Nigeria. He stated, “The involvement of communities as active stakeholders is indispensable. Modern security challenges are increasingly complex and demand strong collaboration between the armed forces, civil authorities, and the communities they serve.”

Earlier, Secretary to the State Government Malam Bala Ibrahim welcomed the participants, describing the college as one of Nigeria’s premier institutions for training strategic leaders. He explained that the study tour offers participants valuable opportunities to exchange ideas and gain practical insights into governance, security management, and intergovernmental collaboration.

Ibrahim reiterated the Jigawa State Government’s commitment to enhancing citizens’ welfare through investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, youth empowerment, and economic development.

Brigadier General B.O. Omopariola, leader of the visiting delegation, characterized Jigawa as a peaceful, hospitable, and development-focused state. He noted that Jigawa was chosen for the exercise due to its reputation as one of Nigeria’s most stable regions.
