Police deny political motive in Ayodele Babatola rape case

Ekiti Police Clarify Arrest of Ayodele Babatola Amidst Allegations of Political Motives
The Ekiti State Police Command has issued a statement regarding the arrest and prosecution of Ayodele Babatola, asserting that the actions taken were lawful and not politically motivated.
This clarification comes in response to claims circulating on social media that the police collaborated with the Ekiti State Government to detain Babatola in connection with a rape allegation.
Police spokesperson SP Abutu Sunday reported that the case originated on May 25, 2026, at approximately 1:00 a.m., when Bukola Oluwaseun, 30, lodged a complaint at the Oke-Ila Divisional Police Headquarters. Oluwaseun alleged that Babatola raped and assaulted her the previous night at KIIBAT HOTEL located along Petim Estate in the Adebayo area of Ado-Ekiti. Officers noted visible injuries on Oluwaseun upon her arrival.
The complainant indicated that she met Babatola online three months prior to the incident, while he was abroad. Following his return to Nigeria, they agreed to meet in person at the Captain Cook area of Ado-Ekiti. Oluwaseun claimed that Babatola subsequently drove her to the hotel under the pretext of having a conversation, but then assaulted her against her will. She alleged that he physically attacked her when she resisted and subsequently severed all communication.
Following the report, police invited Babatola for questioning before subsequently transferring the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more in-depth inquiry. During his questioning, Babatola stated that he became agitated when Oluwaseun allegedly requested payment before engaging in sexual activity. He denied penetrating her but acknowledged that he left the hotel and discontinued contact with her.
A medical examination conducted on the victim corroborated her claim, confirming signs of penetration. Following the investigation, Babatola has been charged and is currently being held at the Correctional Service Centre in Ado-Ekiti.
The police command has urged the public to dismiss any suggestions of illegal arrest or political interference, emphasizing that the case was initiated based on a formal complaint and was thoroughly investigated. SP Abutu Sunday reaffirmed the command’s commitment to fairness, justice, professionalism, human rights, and the rule of law.
