Drone Strikes Leave 13,000 Without Power in Zaporizhzhia as Attacks Escalate

Ukraine has intensified its drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure overnight, resulting in significant damage across multiple regions. The largest attack targeted Taganrog in Rostov Oblast, where Russian state media reported a major fire at the port after drones struck a tanker, a fuel tank, and an administrative building.
Rostov Governor Yury Slyusar confirmed the attack on a state-backed messaging app early Saturday, stating, “A tanker, a fuel tank, and an administrative building caught fire at the port of Taganrog as a result of a drone attack. According to preliminary information, there are no casualties. The information is being clarified.”
However, the attack injured two civilians when a drone hit a private home in Taganrog. Slyusar reported, “Tonight, civilians were injured again as a result of an air strike on Taganrog. Medics are providing assistance and doing everything necessary.”
Slyusar noted that Russian air defenses successfully intercepted multiple drones across four districts during the nighttime assault. “During the repulse of an air attack on the Rostov region, UAVs were destroyed in the city of Taganrog, Chertkovsky, Matveyevo-Kurgansky, and Neklinovsky districts,” he added.
In Grekovo-Timofeyevka, a gas pipe in a house was damaged by a drone, prompting the evacuation of residents. No casualties were reported. In the Neklinovsky District village of Botsmanovo, windows in two houses were damaged, but no injuries occurred.
Additional drone attacks targeted an oil facility in Armavir, Krasnodar Krai, and caused extensive fires near Yaroslavl. Furthermore, the Volgograd oil refinery was forced to halt operations due to drone strikes.
Taganrog has experienced multiple targeted assaults in recent months; a drone strike in late March claimed one life and injured eight others.
Meanwhile, Russia launched 90 drones and two ballistic missiles at Ukraine overnight, impacting Zaporizhzhia, where approximately 13,000 residents lost power due to damage to energy infrastructure. Ukrainian local media reported further destruction in the Sumy region, affecting infrastructure, homes, and vehicles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Friday of a potential new large-scale assault by Russia. “We possess intelligence indicating that Russia is organizing a new large-scale assault. Our services are reacting swiftly and are ready,” he stated on Telegram, urging citizens to protect themselves and calling on allies to expedite deliveries of Patriot missile systems.
This escalation follows Russia’s warning to foreign nationals to vacate Kyiv, with indications that it plans to execute “systematic strikes” on the city’s defense infrastructure.
Tensions between Moscow and NATO intensified after a Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania on Friday, injuring two individuals.
