‘Nigerians now know you as liars’ – Wike slams NDC, other parties

Wike Criticizes Opposition Parties, Accuses Them of Deceit
ABUJA—Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has labeled opposition political parties as “known liars,” claiming they have misled Nigerians regarding political reform.
Wike made these statements during his monthly media briefing on Monday, where he highlighted alleged inconsistencies and questions of credibility in the internal democratic processes of various parties, specifically the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
He criticized these parties for projecting an image of moral superiority while grappling with internal conflicts, particularly during their recent primaries. Wike expressed skepticism about their ability to provide effective leadership, questioning their claims of being “untainted” or “messianic.”
“They said they are the savior that will come. What has happened now?” Wike asked rhetorically, pointing to the internal disputes arising during electoral processes.
Wike cited the NDC’s inability to conduct primaries without protests, despite its claims of being a new face of democracy. He also questioned the ADC’s portrayal as a coalition destined to restore democracy in Nigeria.
“While the congress was going on, two presidential aspirants said, ‘We cannot believe that you will perpetrate this,'” he noted, suggesting that recent events have undermined the parties’ credibility.
He further remarked that Nigerians are becoming increasingly aware of these inconsistencies and challenged the opposition’s portrayal of themselves as a “newborn” alternative in the political landscape.
Wike concluded with skepticism regarding the future of opposition parties, stating, “I prefer the old parties that have experience in this environment and understand Nigerian culture.”
This statement adds to the ongoing discourse surrounding the legitimacy and internal struggles of Nigeria’s political parties as they prepare for upcoming elections.
