Five Dead, 12 Injured in Nkalagu Road Accident

Nkalagu, Ebonyi State — A road accident claimed the lives of five individuals and left 12 others injured along the Enugu–Abakaliki Federal Highway on Tuesday.

Daniel Asanya, the Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed that the incident was a lone crash involving a commercial bus. The accident took place at Edema Bridge in the Ishielu Local Government Area when a Toyota Hiace bus, traveling from Abakaliki to Enugu, veered off course.

The vehicle, with registration number RSH 231 XE, was transporting 17 passengers, including 12 males, four females, and one female child. Asanya reported that the deceased included four male passengers and the female child, while the remaining passengers suffered varying degrees of injury.

Initial investigations suggest that excessive speed may have been a contributing factor to the crash. Items recovered from the scene included three mobile phones, personal belongings in two sack bags, and a quarter bag of rice.

The injured victims were transported to Annunciation Hospital in Emene, Enugu State, for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to a local morgue.

Asanya urged motorists to exercise caution on the highway, particularly in areas undergoing construction and maintenance. He also called on the construction company managing the road project to ensure adequate warning signs and reflective markers are in place to enhance road safety for drivers.
