Senator Bernie Sanders has publicly criticized Jeff Bezos for dining with Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago while Amazon workers went on strike across multiple U.S. locations Thursday, December 19.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sanders condemned Bezos and his partner, Lauren Sanchez, for their Wednesday night double date with Trump and Melania, accusing the Amazon founder of illegal union-busting. Sanders also called on Amazon to comply with labor laws and negotiate a fair contract with the Teamsters union.
The strike involved delivery drivers at seven Amazon facilities in New York, California, Illinois, and Georgia. Backed by the Teamsters, workers hit the picket lines after Amazon failed to meet a Sunday deadline to begin contract negotiations.
According to The New York Times, the National Labor Relations Board has previously accused Amazon of refusing to bargain with its employees in at least one investigation. The striking workers are pushing for a labor agreement that ensures fair wages and protections, as tensions between the e-commerce giant and organized labor continue to escalate.
