‘It was not overloaded’ — Nigerian Railway Corporation speaks on Warri-Itakpe train accident

Nigerian Railway Corporation Director-General Addresses Warri-Itakpe Train Accident

The Director-General of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, stated that the train involved in the recent Warri-Itakpe accident was not overloaded.

Opeifa made this assertion during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’ on Wednesday, following an incident that occurred on Monday, resulting in five fatalities.

During the interview, Opeifa refrained from providing detailed analysis of the incident but noted that discussions with passengers revealed some reported sensations of shaking during the ride. He emphasized the importance of passenger feedback in understanding the event.

“I know that the train was not overloaded,” Opeifa said. “Since Sunday, after Salah, we have experienced high demand, with more than 200 people arriving at train stations daily, which has made it difficult to accommodate all passengers.”

He highlighted that the Warri-Itakpe route has seen increased patronage, attracting travelers from various regions, including Abuja, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Edo states.
