Gov Yusuf holds closed-door meeting with Rurum, Dan’agundi over Kano Emirate tension

KANO, Nigeria — Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf convened a closed-door meeting Wednesday night with House of Representatives member Kabiru Alhassan Rurum and National Productivity Centre Director-General Baffa Babba Dan’agundi at the Kano State Government House.
The meeting, which lasted nearly two hours, has garnered attention amid persistent tensions surrounding the Kano Emirate. Sources reported that Rurum and Dan’agundi arrived shortly before 10:30 p.m. and proceeded directly to the governor’s office.
While the specific topics discussed during the meeting remain unclear, the timing has raised eyebrows, as it follows the Kano State Government’s recent ban on Durbar processions and horse-riding activities in the city. This decision was made after an emergency meeting of the State Security Council, which expressed concerns over potential clashes involving large groups of supporters, as well as the risk of injury and property damage. Security agencies have been instructed to enforce this order strictly.
A source informed that Governor Yusuf personally escorted Rurum and Dan’agundi from the Government House, engaging them in a cordial manner. However, when approached for comments, Rurum did not confirm or deny the meeting, instead questioning, “Is it a crime for me to meet with my friend, my brother, and my political leader?” Dan’agundi acknowledged his attendance but declined to disclose details, describing the gathering as a “family affair.”
As of now, neither Rurum nor Dan’agundi has shared the outcome of the discussions. The meeting’s significance is further underscored by reports that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II rode a horse against the recent restrictions, heightening ongoing disputes over the emirate.
In a related matter, Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan’agundi, Senior Counsellor to the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, indicated that supporters of the Bayero faction are awaiting the emir’s return before announcing plans for a horse-riding procession. Emir Bayero is expected back from an official engagement on Monday, and further details regarding any potential event will be disclosed after consultation with him.
