Arsenal to Begin Title Defense Against Coventry City in Premier League Opener

Published on June 19, 2026

Arsenal will commence their defense of the Premier League title against promoted Coventry City on August 21. The Premier League fixtures for the 2026-27 season were announced on Friday, highlighting Arsenal’s home matchup against Coventry as one of the key matches in the opening round.

Coventry returns to the top tier after a 25-year absence, having claimed the Championship title last season.

Andoni Iraola’s inaugural match as Liverpool manager will take place at Newcastle United on August 23. His first home game will be the following weekend against Nottingham Forest.

Manchester City will begin their campaign post-Pep Guardiola with a home match against Bournemouth on August 23. City is expected to appoint ex-Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to take over for Guardiola, who stepped down after a decade at the helm.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will face Fulham in a west London derby on August 24.

Hull City, who secured promotion through the Championship playoffs, will start their first Premier League season since 2017 with a home match against Manchester United on August 22. Additionally, Europa League winners Aston Villa will travel to Brighton & Hove Albion during the opening weekend.

Arsenal, champions for the first time since 2004, will face a critical stretch following their game against Coventry. After hosting Coventry, Mikel Arteta’s team will play away at Aston Villa before meeting Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on September 5.

The first Manchester derby of the post-Guardiola era is slated for the weekend of September 12, while Liverpool will host Manchester United on November 21. Arsenal and City will not meet until November 28 at the Emirates.

The first Merseyside derby of the season, featuring Everton and Liverpool, is also scheduled for November 28 at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Roberto De Zerbi will lead Tottenham in his first north London derby against Arsenal on December 5.

In a notable Boxing Day matchup, Coventry’s Frank Lampard will face his former club, Chelsea, on December 26.

The Premier League will conclude on May 30, with Arsenal hosting Brighton, Manchester City traveling to Sunderland, and Liverpool welcoming Bournemouth. Chelsea and United will finish their seasons at home against Brentford and Fulham, respectively.

The start and conclusion of the upcoming season are later than typical due to the FIFA World Cup 2026, which wraps up just 34 days before the Premier League kicks off. Arsenal will also face FA Cup champions Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 16, offering a preview of the season ahead.
