Two Roadside Bomb Blasts in Northwestern Pakistan Claim Seven Lives

20 Jun 2026

Two separate roadside bomb explosions in northwestern Pakistan have resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals, according to local authorities.

The initial blast occurred on Saturday when a vehicle was targeted. A second explosion followed shortly afterward as rescuers arrived on the scene, prompting additional casualties.

Yasir Afridi, a police officer in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, confirmed that a private pickup truck carrying passengers was struck by a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED). Afridi noted that three additional people were injured when a second device detonated while they were being transported to a hospital for emergency care.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attacks, vowing that the government would pursue justice against those responsible.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the bombings, the Pakistan Taliban, known as TTP, and various other armed factions are active in the region.

Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of harboring these militant groups and contributing to an increase in violence near the border. The Taliban government in Kabul has consistently denied these allegations.

Relations between the two countries have strained further in recent months, with reported clashes escalating into military actions. Earlier this month, Pakistani air strikes resulted in the deaths of at least 26 Taliban fighters, according to the Pakistani government, while Afghan authorities reported that 12 civilians lost their lives in the same strikes.

The border between Pakistan and Afghanistan has largely remained closed since violence escalated last October, severely impacting bilateral trade and the movement of people and goods across the frontier.
