‘Bandits getting support from people in power’ — Ex-NYSC DG alleges

Former NYSC Director-General Alleges Government Complicity in Banditry
KADUNA — Brigadier General Maharazu Tsiga (retired), a former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has raised concerns about the potential involvement of influential individuals in government in the activities of bandits terrorizing various communities.
Tsiga made these remarks during a press conference held in Kaduna, where he also paid tribute to his late colleague, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retired), who reportedly died while in the custody of bandits in Katsina State.
Earlier this year, Tsiga experienced his own kidnapping in his hometown of Katsina. He described the ordeal as traumatic, detailing the harsh conditions he faced.
“There are indications that these bandits may have support from people in power,” Tsiga said, referencing an incident in which he overheard a phone conversation in the dead of night. “I heard someone call their leader, Kachala, asking if he was prepared to purchase ten cartons of ammunition.”
He recalled humorously suggesting to the caller that he could also become involved in the business. The response he received pointed out his status: “You are a retired general. You don’t have an office. We are talking to people who are in office now,” Tsiga recounted.
These statements come amid ongoing concerns regarding the rise of banditry in Nigeria and the perceived complicity of various influential figures, raising alarm among community leaders and residents.
