Lagos State House of Assembly Inaugurates First Female Clerk

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State House of Assembly has welcomed Barrister Adenike Oshinowo as the new Clerk, succeeding Barrister Olalekan Onafeko, who recently retired. Oshinowo’s appointment, effective April 28, 2026, marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman to hold this position since the Assembly’s inception.

Oshinowo is recognized for her expertise in legislative drafting and her extensive experience in parliamentary administration, legal advisory services, and public sector governance. She earned a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in Legislative Drafting from the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from Lagos State University. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1995.

Her career began in private legal practice before she joined the Lagos State Civil Service as a Legal Draftsman in 1997. Oshinowo’s journey within the Lagos State House of Assembly commenced in 1999, where she served until 2006 before transitioning to the Ministry of Justice. She returned to the Assembly in 2008, progressively advancing through various roles, culminating in her appointment as Deputy Clerk in 2021 and subsequently as Clerk in 2026.

Oshinowo is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association and the International Bar Association. Her contributions have been recognized with multiple awards, including the Lagos State House of Assembly Long Service Award.
