Bayelsa Gov, Diri dethrones traditional ruler over insecurity

Bayelsa Governor Dethrones Suspended Chief of Swali Community

YENAGOA, Nigeria — Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has officially removed Chief Wilcox Seiyefa from his position as the paramount ruler of the Swali Community. The announcement was made by Deputy Governor Peter Akpe during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Tuesday at the Government House.

The decision to dethrone Seiyefa was based on recommendations from a fact-finding committee. In May 2025, the state government had previously suspended both the chief and his Council of Chiefs due to allegations of fostering insecurity within the community.

Governor Diri emphasized that the removal aligns with Section Six of the state’s Chieftaincy Law, which relates to maintaining peace, order, and good governance. He urged for the immediate initiation of the election process for a new paramount ruler, aiming for completion within three months.

“The fact-finding committee consulted various stakeholders in the Swali Community and sought guidance from security agencies,” Diri stated. “Their findings revealed that the leadership at the time lacked the firmness needed to address the escalating violence and insecurity in the area.”
