‘It’s new’ – Rufai Oseni raises questions about Tinubu’s US taxi-driving story

Rufai Oseni, an anchor with Arise Television, has raised questions about President Bola Tinubu’s account of his past following the President’s recent statement that he once drove taxis in the United States. During an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Oseni noted that Nigerians are beginning to discover new aspects of Tinubu’s background, contrasting this latest revelation with previous assertions the President made about inheriting significant real estate wealth from his parents.
“President Tinubu has mentioned various accomplishments, but this taxi-driving detail is new,” Oseni said. He recalled that in an interview with the BBC before the last presidential election, Tinubu emphasized his inheritance of substantial real estate.
Oseni expressed a mixture of acknowledgment and skepticism regarding the government’s initiatives highlighted by Tinubu, such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), investments in healthcare, and funding for universities. However, he challenged the tangible impact of these initiatives on the everyday lives of Nigerians.
“The question is the trickle-down effects,” Oseni remarked. “Are people still accessing healthcare? Is the healthcare sector being revamped?” He voiced concerns that despite government borrowing, citizens have not witnessed corresponding improvements in services.
Oseni called for a clearer demonstration of how government spending and borrowing have benefited the populace, pointing out, “We are not seeing adequate spending concerning the budget. While loans are being collected, the tangible effects of these funds remain unclear.”
