Sudan Declares Cholera Outbreak in West Kordofan State
Sudan has officially announced a cholera outbreak in West Kordofan State, where health authorities report hundreds of suspected cases and over 100 related fatalities amid ongoing conflict in the region.
As of June 20, 2026, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that the West Kordofan State Ministry of Health has recorded 838 suspected cholera cases, seven confirmed infections, and 117 deaths.
Tedros highlighted that the outbreak is exacerbated by ongoing conflict, which has hampered access to essential health services for affected communities. He emphasized that widespread population displacement has complicated efforts to provide necessary medical care. Insecurity and logistical constraints are delaying the deployment of emergency response teams, medical supplies, and humanitarian assistance.
The World Health Organization is coordinating a comprehensive health response with various partners. Efforts include expanding cholera treatment centers and oral rehydration points, distributing cholera response kits, installing handwashing stations, and training personnel including chlorinators, hygiene promoters, and health workers.
Additionally, the agency is supporting community health education initiatives aimed at mitigating the spread of the disease as efforts to contain the outbreak continue.
