LG Chairman, Councillors draw battle line over impeachment in Delta
Conflict Erupts Between Oshimili North Local Government Council’s Legislative and Executive Arms
Oshimili North, Delta State – Tensions have escalated between the legislative and executive branches of the Oshimili North local government council, resulting in a leadership crisis that has divided council members.
The dispute centers on the council’s chairman, Innocent Esewezie, and the recent impeachment of the legislative leader, Jeffrey Mordi. Allegations have emerged that Esewezie directed the removal of the Legislative building’s roof to hinder proceedings and prevent a planned impeachment. Mordi and his supporters, however, have continued legislative activities under a tree within the council premises to maintain operations.
The conflict began with the impeachment of Mordi, which some sources allege was orchestrated by Esewezie. Reports indicate that several council members were incentivized to support the executive body with vehicles and financial offerings, while Mordi staunchly resisted these enticements, asserting his position as leader.
As tensions rose, the situation intensified when unidentified individuals and security personnel became involved, allegedly attempting to intimidate members aligned with Mordi. During this turmoil, Mordi took custody of the Mace, the official symbol of authority for the House, citing concerns for its safety due to the chamber’s compromised security. However, this action reportedly further strained relations with Esewezie, who interpreted Mordi’s move as a challenge to his authority.
In response, Mordi filed a petition with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), claiming that the local government’s 2025 budget was executed without the necessary legislative approval.
Attempts to obtain comments from the involved parties have been unsuccessful.
