Benue, Plateau tragedies: Peter Obi sends urgent message to Tinubu

Obi Urges Enhanced Security Measures Following Attacks in Benue, Plateau

Presidential candidate Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the Federal Government to bolster security in the wake of recent violent incidents in Benue and Plateau States.

In a statement released on July 13, 2026, Obi highlighted the tragic outcomes of the attacks, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 16 individuals in the Otukpo-Nobi community of Benue State and nine members of a family, including a two-month-old infant, in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. He emphasized that these events underscore ongoing security challenges faced by local communities.

“Families in Benue, Plateau, and other regions continue to confront violence, displacement, and the loss of livelihoods,” Obi remarked, noting that the situation should not be normalized.

He characterized the recent violence as “painful and deeply disturbing,” reiterating the government’s fundamental obligation to protect lives and property. “Every Nigerian life is sacred, and every life lost is one too many,” he stated.

Obi called for a security strategy focusing on intelligence gathering, swift response, and accountability. He insisted that those responsible for the attacks must be identified, apprehended, and prosecuted.

“The time has come to move beyond routine condemnations after every attack,” Obi said. “Nigerians deserve a security framework that is proactive rather than reactive.” He emphasized the necessity of ending the culture of impunity surrounding such violence.

Additionally, Obi extended condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the governments and residents of Benue and Plateau States, expressing hope for the recovery of affected communities.
