Oyo State Police Arrest Suspected Armed Robber, Recover Stolen Motorcycle

The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a suspect in connection with an armed robbery, recovering a stolen motorcycle in the process. The incident occurred in the Apata area of Ibadan, where a commercial motorcyclist, identified as Muhammadu Kamilu, was allegedly attacked.

According to Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, a report from a concerned citizen prompted the police response. The victim was attacked by a passenger who struck him with an iron hammer and fled with his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle.

Following the report, officers from the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) were dispatched to the scene. The suspect, Shafiu Nuhu, was arrested, and the stolen motorcycle, registered as AJW 842 QU, was recovered. Police also retrieved the iron hammer believed to have been used in the assault.

During the altercation, Kamilu sustained injuries, and a Good Samaritan, Nathaniel Ibrahim, who attempted to assist him, was also hurt. Both individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

In an interrogation, Nuhu allegedly admitted to working as a lone armed robber, targeting commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan and surrounding areas. The police indicated that investigations will continue to determine if he is connected to other crimes and to recover additional stolen items.

Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga commended the individuals whose timely actions led to the arrest and urged residents to remain vigilant. He encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities to the police.

The command reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the safety of residents and pledged to pursue intelligence-led policing methods to combat criminal activities.
