RINGIM, Jigawa State – At least 30 individuals are feared dead following the capsizing of a canoe in the Ringim Local Government Area on Sunday evening. The incident occurred near Malamawar Yandutse village, where the canoe was reportedly carrying around 40 passengers, predominantly women and children.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that rescue operations are currently ongoing. Families of the victims have been advised to identify the bodies for burial as search-and-rescue efforts continue.
Muhammad Bala Sanusi, the Director of Planning at the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), confirmed the incident and stated that the numbers of casualties and survivors have not yet been confirmed. Sanusi noted that the specific cause of the accident remains under investigation, with agency officials collaborating with local residents to locate survivors and account for all individuals aboard the canoe.
Malam Habibu Dauda, Chairman of the Emergency Management Committee, also addressed the situation, urging the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information until official reports are made available by the authorities.
