Monsoon Rains Cause Widespread Destruction in Northern India

At least 25 people have died in floods and landslides affecting northern and northeastern India, according to local officials. The incidents follow several days of heavy monsoon rains.
Over the weekend, severe weather impacted regions in Indian-administered Kashmir and Nagaland. In Kashmir, officials reported that rain-related incidents in the Poonch, Rajouri, and Doda districts accounted for at least 15 fatalities, with several others still unaccounted for, according to a senior police official. Meanwhile, in Nagaland, persistent rainfall triggered landslides that resulted in the deaths of nine individuals.
“We have recovered four of the eight bodies, and rescue efforts are ongoing,” said Wennyei Konyak, magistrate of Nagaland’s Mon district, in an interview with AFP. He also confirmed that at least 15 others sustained injuries.
In Jammu, a flash flood in Rajouri caused substantial damage to both public and private property, severely disrupting daily life. A statement from the office of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah indicated that army personnel and state emergency responders rescued 11 individuals, including five children.
In Assam, local disaster management authorities reported one fatality due to flooding. They stated that more than 57,000 people across seven districts have been affected.
India’s meteorological department has issued warnings for potential extreme rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days, predicting that active monsoon conditions could persist in the region for up to a week.
In response to the adverse weather, authorities have temporarily suspended the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, which attracted over 400,000 Hindu devotees last year, as well as the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage in Jammu. Officials cited concerns for the safety of pilgrims until routes are cleared.
Floods and related incidents have become a recurrent issue in India during the monsoon season, which follows the lengthy summer months. Many areas are also grappling with severe water scarcity and drought conditions.
