Senegal’s AFCON Title Appeal Set for October Hearing
Senegal’s appeal to reclaim the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, won in a controversial final against Morocco in January, will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on October 8.
CAS announced on Friday that the proceedings will take place behind closed doors at its Lausanne headquarters, although no timeline for a decision has been provided.
Typically, CAS judges may take several months to reach a verdict. The preparation for Senegal’s appeal coincided with the recent World Cup, during which Morocco advanced to the quarterfinals, while Senegal was eliminated in the round of 32 by Belgium.
The AFCON final, held in Rabat, ended in a 1-0 victory for Senegal after extra time. The match was notably marred by a contentious stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco, which led to a 15-minute delay as Senegal’s players briefly left the field. Following the final, the Confederation of African Football ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match due to their exit from the pitch.
This decision sparked debate, as it appeared to contradict established football regulations, which assert that the referee’s on-field decisions are final.
