Why it’s now more difficult for up-and-coming artistes to make it in Nigeria – Slimcase

Slimcase Raises Concerns Over Music Promotion Costs in Nigeria
Street artist Slimcase has voiced his concerns regarding the challenges faced by emerging musicians in Nigeria, particularly in light of escalating music promotion costs.
In a recent interview with Echo Room, Slimcase revealed that promoting a single track can cost up to N265 million, making it increasingly difficult for new artists to gain traction in the competitive industry.
He attributed the rise in promotional expenses partly to the growing influencer culture, noting that dancers and content creators—once reliant on artists for exposure—now demand significant fees for featuring songs in their work.
“Back in the day, dancers filled artists’ direct messages. Now, you have to pay them large sums, even content creators. $200,000 is no longer sufficient to propel a song to success. This has led to a situation where only a handful of artists dominate the scene for decades, while many talented newcomers remain overlooked,” Slimcase said.
He urged music executives and industry stakeholders to take the plight of emerging artists into account and work towards lowering promotional costs. Additionally, he appealed to the public to support upcoming musicians rather than allowing influencers and mainstream media to dictate their listening preferences.
