Russian Strikes in Ukraine Leave Six Dead, Including Child
Kyiv officials reported that Russian military strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least six people in Ukraine, including a child, following ballistic missile attacks on the capital and regions such as Chernihiv. The attacks took place on Sunday, with reports of a drone strike in the Russian-occupied city of Horlivka resulting in four fatalities.
Ukraine’s air force indicated that Russian forces launched seven ballistic missiles and 136 drones overnight, targeting cities including Kyiv, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv.
In Chernihiv, a Russian drone struck a supermarket, killing two people, including a nine-year-old girl, and injuring 25 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a “deeply cynical drone strike on an ordinary supermarket.”
The eastern city of Kharkiv also faced assaults, where a drone attack led to one death and 16 injuries, according to the local mayor. “This is deliberate Russian terror with absolutely no military justification,” Zelenskyy commented.
In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that a glide bomb attack resulted in one death and six injuries amid ongoing bombardment in the area.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a fire broke out on the seventh and eighth floors of a central district apartment building after the missile attack, with three individuals wounded. Emergency services released images showing vehicles engulfed in flames.
In Sloviansk, part of the contested Donetsk region, the national oil and gas company Naftogaz confirmed the deaths of two employees in a Russian attack while they were aiding residents affected by a prior strike.
Conversely, Horlivka’s Russian-installed Mayor Ivan Prikhodko stated that four civilians were killed in a Ukrainian drone strike, and that a subsequent drone incident injured three medics and a resident.
Additionally, Russian authorities reported that at least 12 people, including two children, were injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on Belgorod, a city near the Ukrainian border.
These incidents followed Moscow’s claims of a Ukrainian strike on a Russian-occupied town near the Azov Sea that left 12 people dead.
Both Russia and Ukraine deny intentionally targeting civilians in the ongoing conflict, which escalated in February 2022 with Russia’s full-scale invasion. However, the United Nations has noted a significant rise in civilian casualties in 2026.
UN figures indicate that 1,396 civilians have been killed and 7,978 wounded in Ukraine in the first half of 2026, while Russia has reported 250 civilian deaths and 1,596 injuries. Analysts attribute the increase in casualties to the heightened use of drones and intensified strikes on infrastructure in both countries.
Negotiations led by the United States to cease hostilities have stalled, with the Kremlin continuing its efforts to gain control over eastern and southern Ukraine.
