Drone Carrying Explosives Found at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Investigation Underway
Leipzig, Germany — August 5, 2026 — German authorities are investigating the discovery of a drone equipped with an explosive device at Leipzig/Halle Airport. An airport employee reported the drone, which contained what officials characterized as “an unknown explosive device.”
The incident prompted police to remove the detonator from the device before it was assessed by an explosives-disposal robot. Authorities have not released specific details regarding the nature of the device.
The airport’s north runway was briefly closed for approximately two hours, reopening later in the day. Meanwhile, the south runway remained unavailable due to scheduled maintenance.
Flight operations were impacted after an unidentified flying object was detected near the airport late Tuesday night, leading to the diversion of several flights, including one passenger aircraft. In addition, a cargo plane departing from the airport reportedly collided with a small object, resulting in minor damage. That aircraft later diverted to Hannover Airport, where officials conducted an inspection but did not confirm if the collision was related to the drone.
The investigation is being led by prosecutors in Saxony, who specialize in politically motivated and extremist crimes. As of now, no suspects have been identified, and no claims of responsibility have emerged.
Authorities assured that there was no immediate threat to travelers or airport employees, and flights returned to normal operations on Wednesday.
Photos from the scene depicted police technicians utilizing an explosives-disposal robot close to a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane that was at the airport. However, officials have not confirmed whether this aircraft was the intended target of the drone.
