HONG KONG — Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso commented on Mykhailo Mudryk’s performance following the winger’s return to competitive football after a 20-month absence. Mudryk made his first appearance in nearly two years during Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Juventus at Kai Tak Stadium on Wednesday. This match marked the Blues’ third in their preseason schedule.
In a post-match press conference, Alonso provided updates on the fitness of forward Cole Palmer and defender Levi Colwill. “Yes, they experienced a few discomforts, not injuries,” Alonso said. “Cole took a knock and Levi did as well, so it was prudent not to take any risks today. We hope they will be ready for Saturday.”
Colwill did not participate in open training on Tuesday, while Palmer trained separately from the main group.
Mudryk returned to the pitch after his anti-doping suspension was lifted last week. The 25-year-old entered the match as a substitute for Nicolas Jackson late in the second half.
“I am very happy for him,” Alonso remarked when discussing Mudryk’s brief appearance. “It was an emotional moment for everyone at the club to see him back, especially when I informed him before the match that my plan was for him to play 10-15 minutes. He was undoubtedly excited. After such a lengthy absence, being back on the pitch was a wonderful experience for him and for all of us.”
The only goal of the match came from Edon Zhegrova, who scored a stunning strike from distance that found the top corner midway through the second half. While Chelsea limited Juventus to just one other shot on target, they failed to find an equalizer.
