Lagos State Government Arrests 27 Suspected Vandals of New Bridge
The Lagos State Government announced the arrest of 27 individuals suspected of vandalizing key structural components of a newly constructed bridge that connects FESTAC Town to Alakija.
In a statement, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, indicated that the arrests occurred during a coordinated midnight operation. This effort involved the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force.
The operation stemmed from the discovery of vandalism beneath the bridge during an enforcement initiative aimed at addressing various forms of environmental pollution along the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway. This initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directives to eliminate illegal motor parks, roadside trading, market displays on highway setbacks, and other violations.
Investigations revealed that the suspects intentionally removed iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables, and other materials critical to the bridge’s structural integrity. The government condemned this act, highlighting its potential to jeopardize public safety and undermine investments in essential infrastructure.
“This criminal act poses a serious threat to public safety and undermines the government’s investment in critical infrastructure,” the statement read.
The 27 suspects are set to face prosecution under the relevant laws of Lagos State. The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and indicated it would continue to take robust action against vandalism, environmental violations, and other criminal activities that threaten the safety and well-being of residents.
