Russian Strikes Kill Three Near Kyiv Amid Calls for Enhanced Air Defenses
Attack coincides with US Senate’s passage of new sanctions against Russia.
Kyiv, Ukraine – Russian attacks on Saturday resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a child, in the vicinity of Kyiv, Ukrainian officials reported. The strikes targeted the Boryspil district, located just outside the capital, causing multiple explosions and fires throughout the area.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the regional administration, stated that three additional people sustained injuries from the assault. This incident represents a continuation of sustained Russian bombardments that have increasingly challenged Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, leading to a significant disparity between Russia’s offensive operations and Ukraine’s defensive measures.
Explosions rattled buildings in central Kyiv after an air raid alert was issued early in the day. Witnesses described the powerful blasts and the subsequent fires in two districts of the city. Russian ballistic missiles, which travel at hypersonic speeds and descend steeply, leave Ukrainian defenders with only seconds to react.
Currently, Patriot air defense systems provided by the United States are the primary means capable of intercepting these missiles. However, Ukrainian officials have voiced concerns over inadequate supplies of interception batteries necessary for robust city protection.
Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted a drastic decrease in air-defense missile supplies during the first half of this year, receiving only one-third of what was delivered in the same timeframe in 2025. He linked this shortfall to the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has depleted global air defense stocks.
Government estimates suggest Russia can now launch approximately 100 ballistic missiles per month, prompting warnings from officials about an anticipated escalation of attacks as winter approaches.
In a reciprocal military response, Ukraine has launched strikes targeting facilities deep within Russian territory, including two oil refineries and, recently, a warehouse for the online retailer Wildberries in Ekaterinburg. Ukrainian authorities assert these strikes aim to disrupt logistics supporting Russia’s military operations.
In related developments, the governor of Russian-occupied Crimea reported two fatalities resulting from a Ukrainian drone strike on an apartment building on Friday.
New Sanctions Bill Passed by US Senate
In a separate but related matter, the US Senate passed a comprehensive sanctions bill on Friday aimed at Russian energy exports, instituting 100 percent tariffs on nations continuing to purchase Russian oil and gas. The legislation in question, which passed with an 86-11 vote, is named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, a known proponent of aggressive measures against Russia’s actions.
The bill must now pass through the House of Representatives and receive presidential approval before taking effect. President Zelenskyy expressed his support for the Senate’s decision, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remarked that it would help “drain Russia’s means to continue a war it cannot win.”
