Ogun Governor Welcomes Political Groups to APC Ahead of 2027 Elections
ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced the integration of members from the Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD) political family and the Buruji Kashamu political group into the All Progressives Congress (APC). During a meeting at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta, Abiodun characterized the joining of these groups as a vital enhancement for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor commended the decision of the two political families to align with the APC and emphasized the importance of political unity among those with shared interests, especially during election seasons.
Abiodun expressed concern regarding the recent relaunch of a foundation by former governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, was the guest of honor. He suggested that this action could indicate Daniel’s intention to operate beyond the APC, despite his respected status in the state’s political landscape.
“My relationship with Daniel has always been founded on mutual respect,” Abiodun noted, highlighting his long-standing connection to Ogun State politics, which precedes Daniel’s tenure as governor. He reflected on the lessons learned during his political career, underscoring the significance of respecting the power entrusted to political leaders.
Abiodun acknowledged that he had faced advice against supporting Daniel’s candidacy for the APC senatorial seat in 2023 due to concerns about potential political betrayal. However, he chose to back Daniel out of respect for him as a former governor and a belief in upholding dignity for previous officeholders.
The governor also mentioned a notable conversation with Daniel regarding uncertainties about the next gubernatorial candidate, emphasizing the evolving political dynamics within the state.
Reassuring the new APC entrants, Abiodun pledged to foster unity and inclusiveness within the party. He stated that important announcements regarding Ogun State’s future as an oil-producing state and a proposed deep-sea port would be forthcoming before the year’s end.
In his remarks, Aremo Tunde Adesanya, Senior Consultant on Political Matters, confirmed that the delegation was there to reaffirm its loyalty to the APC and Governor Abiodun. Adesanya, who once coordinated Daniel’s efforts in Odogbolu Local Government, affirmed their commitment to the APC.
Oladipupo Owoduni, another attendee, made it clear that the meeting aimed to consolidate support for the APC and its candidates, refuting claims that any group members would endorse candidates from rival parties. He disclosed the initiation of the “Operation 5 Direct” mobilization program focused on securing victories for APC candidates in the upcoming elections.
The inclusion of these political factions is expected to strengthen the APC’s organizational structure in Ogun East as the party ramps up its mobilization efforts for the 2027 elections.
