Media Aide Criticizes Detention of Former Kaduna Governor Amid Political Controversy
Paul Ibe, a media aide to Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has raised concerns regarding the extended detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Ibe noted that El-Rufai has been in custody for 178 days, contrasting this with the situation of Senator Francis Fadahunsi of Osun East, who remains free despite recently calling for violence against members of the Accord Party.
Ibe stated that El-Rufai’s detention is politically motivated, claiming it is a consequence of his split from President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In a post on social media platform X, Ibe indicated that Fadahunsi’s statements demonstrate a broader conflict within Nigerian politics, suggesting that Tinubu is “waging war against the opposition.”
“Former Governor of Kaduna State and chieftain of the ADC, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has spent 178 days in detention for parting ways politically with President Bola Tinubu’s ruling APC while Senator Francis Fadahunsi is walking freely,” Ibe wrote. He emphasized that high-profile members of the APC facing corruption charges have been allowed to run for election without consequences.
Fadahunsi had sparked outrage after a video surfaced in which he urged APC members in Osun State to take lethal action against Accord Party supporters. Following public backlash, he rephrased his comments, stating that he meant voters should defeat Accord supporters at the polls rather than through violence.
The contrasting circumstances surrounding El-Rufai and Fadahunsi continue to fuel discussions about the state of opposition politics and the rule of law in Nigeria.
