Over 30 feared dead, 50 houses torched as terrorists attack Plateau community

At least 30 people were reported killed and an unspecified number injured during an attack by gunmen suspected to be terrorists in the Jwak Maitumbi community of Mangu Local Government Area in Plateau State on Sunday. More than 50 houses and food barns were also set ablaze in the incident.

A resident, Lonji Zuhumnan, confirmed the violence to DAILY POST on Monday morning. He stated that over 100 armed assailants invaded the community around 7:30 a.m., firing indiscriminately and causing panic among residents.

According to Zuhumnan, who serves as a youth leader in the village, the assault occurred while many residents were attending church services or preparing to go to worship. He detailed that the attackers shot at fleeing residents, resulting in multiple casualties.

“At the end of the carnage, we counted over 30 dead bodies while several others were injured,” Zuhumnan said. “The attackers not only killed and wounded people, but they also destroyed more than 50 houses, including shops, health centers, and churches, as well as large quantities of crops.”

Zuhumnan expressed frustration over the lack of response from security forces, who he claimed were contacted for assistance during the attack but did not arrive until after the assailants had fled the scene.

“Our community, Jwak Maitumbi, came under severe attack yesterday morning,” he said. “As the assailants were having a field day, frantic calls made to security personnel in Mangu were futile.”

The local community is now grappling with the aftermath of the violent incident, which has left several families in mourning and raised concerns about safety in the area.
