TORONTO — Kelsey Mitchell of the Indiana Fever made history Tuesday night by scoring 29 points against the Toronto Tempo, marking the 20th consecutive game in which she has reached 20 or more points. This achievement ties her for the longest such streak in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) history alongside A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces.
Mitchell’s stellar performance contributed to the Fever’s 101-95 victory over the Tempo, securing their fifth straight win. Caitlin Clark also had a noteworthy game, adding 24 points along with seven assists for Indiana.
The duo of Mitchell and Clark has now combined to score 20 or more points in the same game 16 times this season, setting a WNBA record. This surpasses the previous record of 15 games held by Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter of Phoenix in 2008.
Mitchell’s streak began to raise concerns late in the third quarter, when she scored eight points in rapid succession before heading to the locker room, with coach Stephanie White later indicating that she appeared to suffer from overheating rather than a serious injury.
In addition to Mitchell and Clark, Aliyah Boston contributed 16 points, while Sophie Cunningham scored 13 points coming off the bench.
The Fever shot 52.9% from the field compared to the Tempo’s 39.1%, as Toronto suffered its 11th consecutive loss. Marina Mabrey led the Tempo with 22 points, while Brittney Sykes, returning from a foot injury, added 15 points. Aneesah Morrow recorded a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds, and Temi Fagbenle finished with 13 points off the bench.
Indiana began the fourth quarter with a 12-point lead, which grew to 14 points following three free throws from Cunningham with 6:45 remaining. However, the Fever faced difficulties finding their rhythm in the final quarter, allowing the Tempo to close the gap to seven points with just under three minutes remaining.
After a key steal by Makayla Timpson, Cunningham hit a three-pointer to extend Indiana’s lead to 10 points with 1:25 left on the clock. Despite Mabrey’s two quick three-pointers narrowing the gap to 97-93 with 59 seconds left, a turnover from Mabrey set the stage for Indiana to maintain control in the closing moments.
The Fever initially found success with a dominant first quarter, leading 33-23 with 61.9% shooting accuracy. Although the Tempo fought back to cut the lead to six points early in the second quarter, the Fever responded with an 11-point scoring run. Morrow’s three-pointer at the end of the first half brought the halftime score to 57-49 in favor of Indiana.
By halftime, the Fever had shot 59% from the field, compared to Toronto’s 42.2%. The Tempo’s Mabrey started the second half strong, making two baskets that reduced Indiana’s lead to four points. Mitchell responded with a driving layup to put the Fever back up by 10. However, despite a strong finish from the Tempo, Indiana held on for the victory.
