Ogun declares August 20 public holiday to mark Isese Day
The Ogun State Government has announced that Thursday, August 20, 2026, will be designated a public holiday in observance of Isese Day.
This declaration emphasizes the administration’s dedication to fostering Yoruba culture, heritage, and traditional values, according to official sources.
Isese Day was first established as a public holiday in Ogun State in 2023, following a resolution passed by the Ogun State House of Assembly and the endorsement of Governor Dapo Abiodun.
The government highlighted that Isese Day offers practitioners of the Yoruba traditional religion an occasion to honor their ancestors, partake in traditional rites, and promote the values inherent in their spiritual and cultural practices. The celebration fosters a sense of community among adherents while encouraging wider society to recognize and respect the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.
In its statement, the government recognized the vital role of culture and traditional institutions in maintaining the state’s identity and enhancing social cohesion.
Officials are urging residents to celebrate Isese Day peacefully and responsibly, with respect for the beliefs, rights, and practices of others.
