LaLiga: Why I played Ademola Lookman as No.9 against Málaga – Diego Simeone

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone addressed his decision to position Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman as a central attacker during the team’s 2-0 victory over Malaga in their season opener.
With several key players unavailable, including Julián Alvarez, who was not included in the matchday squad, and Alexander Sorloth, who is currently sidelined with an injury, Simeone was compelled to seek alternative options in the attack.
In his comments following the match, Simeone explained that Lookman’s placement in the No. 9 position was influenced by the team’s need for creativity and a reliable forward. “We are trying to find ways to enhance our performance because, at this moment, we lack a forward who can contribute from the start, as Julián was not selected and Sorloth is injured. That position is crucial, and we hope to improve it,” Simeone stated, as reported by Eldesmarque.
Lookman’s adaptability in various attacking roles provides Simeone with additional strategic options, possibly allowing for greater flexibility as the club addresses its current offensive challenges.
