Israeli Airstrike Targets Displaced Palestinians in Gaza, Casualties Reported
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza — An Israeli airstrike early Monday struck a tent sheltering displaced Palestinians near al-Aqsa Hospital in central Gaza, resulting in at least one death and multiple injuries, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.
The attack comes as hostilities continue in the region, despite a ceasefire brokered by the United States aimed at ending ongoing military actions and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The Israeli military reported on Telegram that the airstrike targeted two individuals in the Deir al-Balah area, including Muhammad Abdul Nasser Jaber Abu Asad. The military described Abu Asad as a member of Hamas’s elite military forces, alleging his involvement in the October 7 assault on Israel.
The Israeli army further claimed that the targeted individuals were engaged in activities to rebuild Hamas’s capabilities and posed a threat to Israeli security, characterizing their actions as a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
The latest airstrike adds to the escalating casualty figures in Gaza. As of now, the Palestinian Health Ministry reports a total of 1,288 Palestinians killed since the ceasefire agreement in October 2025. Overall, since the onset of the conflict in October 2023, the death toll has risen to 73,422, with an additional 174,401 individuals reported wounded.
In a tragic incident on Sunday, three Palestinians, including a four-year-old child, were killed during Israeli strikes that targeted northern and southern Gaza, including Khan Younis and the town of az-Zawayda.
Authorities report that a man injured in an attack on Khan Younis succumbed to his wounds, while another individual wounded in a strike at Gaza Port last week also died on Monday.
As diplomatic efforts continue to address the situation, international calls for a resolution remain amidst the ongoing violence.
