Navy intercepts 500 litres suspected illegal AGO, cannabis in Lagos
The Nigerian Navy intercepted 500 liters of suspected illegally sourced Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and substances believed to be cannabis during an operation in the Folu community of Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
The operation was conducted on Monday, August 24, 2026, by personnel stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Lekki. This effort is part of an ongoing campaign to disrupt the illicit storage and movement of petroleum products and to combat the spread of illegal drugs in the area.
Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information, stated that the operation was initiated based on intelligence aimed at addressing activities detrimental to national economic interests and public safety. He noted that the individuals associated with the suspected illicit activities managed to escape before they could be apprehended.
Following the interception, the seized products and suspected cannabis were secured and transported to the base for further investigation in line with established protocols.
Folorunsho emphasized the Navy’s commitment to preventing criminal activities in its operational jurisdiction, particularly those involving illegal trade in petroleum products and other prohibited substances. He stated, “The Nigerian Navy remains dedicated to disrupting activities that threaten national economic interests, public safety, and security within its areas of operations.”
Additionally, he highlighted that this operation is part of a broader strategy to address the unlawful movement and storage of petroleum products, as well as other criminal activities along Nigeria’s waterways and coastal communities.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its intention to sustain operations focused on protecting the nation’s economic assets and ensuring security across its areas of responsibility.
