Senate President Optimistic About Tinubu’s Re-election
UYO, Akwa Ibom State — Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed confidence on Monday that President Bola Tinubu will secure a second term in the 2027 general election, attributing this belief to the accomplishments of his administration.
Speaking during a meeting with members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, TETFund, and NELFund, led by Senator Muntari Dandutse of Katsina South, Akpabio highlighted the achievements of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He stated that the party would have substantial accomplishments to present to Nigerian voters when the election campaign season begins.
Akpabio noted that Tinubu had inherited a challenging economic landscape but had implemented measures that improved state finances and addressed issues related to the payment of salaries and pensions.
“The current president has done a lot for Nigerians. He inherited an economy in shambles. When he took office, 27 states struggled to pay salaries and pensions, but today, the situation has improved thanks to his innovative approaches,” Akpabio said.
He expressed optimism that voters would recognize and reward the administration’s efforts at the ballot box. “In 2027, Nigerians will distinguish between the chaff and the grain and will re-elect President Tinubu,” he added.
The Senate President also criticized opposition politicians challenging Tinubu, suggesting they have failed to present credible alternatives to the APC’s governance.
Furthermore, he defended the performance of the 10th National Assembly, claiming it has made significant progress under his leadership. He emphasized the need for the Senate to collaborate with the executive branch in implementing governmental programs and urged lawmakers to remain focused despite criticisms, particularly from social media.
“We don’t need to listen to social media because it is garbage in, garbage out,” Akpabio stated. He also requested that senators who would not return to the 11th Senate after the 2027 elections maintain their commitment to the APC and continue to support the Tinubu administration, assuring them that their loyalty would be recognized.
The meeting included members of the Senate committee who were visiting Akwa Ibom as part of their legislative duties during the annual recess. Representing the delegation, Dandutse stated that their visit was to fulfill constitutional responsibilities and pay courtesy to the Senate President.
