EPL: ‘He surprised me’ – John McGinn names strongest defender he’s faced

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has named the most formidable defenders he has faced in the Premier League, citing notable players from Arsenal and Manchester United.

In a recent interview on the “Stick To Football” podcast, McGinn identified Riccardo Calafiori and Luke Shaw as the toughest opponents he has encountered in his career.

Calafiori, who joined Arsenal from Bologna in 2024 for a reported fee of £33.7 million, with additional potential add-ons of £8.3 million, has made 67 appearances for the Gunners. He played a crucial role in the club’s Premier League title success during the 2025-26 season.

Shaw, who moved to Manchester United from Southampton in 2014 for an initial fee of £30 million, plus £1 million in add-ons, has faced significant injury challenges but remains a key figure for the team. He has tallyed 328 appearances across all competitions during his tenure with the club.

When asked about the defenders who have presented the greatest challenges, McGinn spoke highly of both players. He stated he was particularly impressed by Calafiori’s strength, saying, “Calafiori was much stronger than I thought, I was really impressed with him.” Regarding Shaw, McGinn noted that he had to adapt his own playing style due to their similar build.

Looking ahead, McGinn will have another opportunity to face Calafiori when Aston Villa squares off against Arsenal on Monday, August 31, in a Premier League matchup.
