Filip Hrgovic Becomes Croatia’s First Heavyweight Boxing Champion
London, August 30, 2026 — Filip Hrgovic made history Saturday night by becoming the first Croatian to capture the International Boxing Federation (IBF) world heavyweight title, defeating British contender Moses Itauma by ninth-round stoppage at the O2 Arena.
In a gripping matchup, the 34-year-old Hrgovic faced the emerging talent Itauma, who was vying to become the second-youngest heavyweight world champion in history. The 21-year-old Itauma started strong, displaying impressive skill and control in the fight’s initial rounds. However, the match took a toll on him as the bout progressed, leading to his eventual defeat.
As the ninth round began, Itauma was visibly fatigued and struggled to maintain his footing. Although he had landed several strong punches earlier in the fight, including a notable uppercut that drew cheers from the crowd, he could not withstand Hrgovic’s relentless attacks. The fight was ultimately halted when Itauma’s trainer, Ben Davison, threw in the towel as referee Howard Foster declared Hrgovic the winner. Itauma had to be carried from the ring on a stretcher and transported to a hospital for evaluation.
“I don’t know from where I got energy in that [ninth] round,” Hrgovic said after the match, acknowledging the physical toll of the fight on both competitors. He attributed his endurance to newfound strength, crediting his training experience with coach Abel Sanchez.
Hrgovic praised Itauma, saying, “I’m the present, and he’s definitely the future. He’s an amazing fighter. He’s one of a kind.” He acknowledged that while Itauma still requires more experience, he was impressed with his performance.
Throughout the fight, Itauma landed several key punches, including a powerful right hook that prompted a standing eight count for Hrgovic in the second round. Hrgovic, however, managed to regain his composure and retaliated with significant blows of his own.
Looking ahead, promoter Frank Warren confirmed that Hrgovic is anticipated to face Cuban Frank Sanchez next. However, Hrgovic expressed his desire to unify the belts by challenging WBO champion Daniel Dubois and WBC titleholder Agit Kabayel, both of whom were present at the event.
“I want unification. Frank Sanchez will wait,” Hrgovic stated.
Hrgovic’s only professional defeat occurred in 2024 against Dubois, when a doctor’s stoppage was called due to deep cuts above his eyes. Now, with the IBF title secured, Hrgovic aims to establish himself further in boxing’s heavyweight division.
