2027: ADC-PCC challenges Tinubu to defend failure to deliver electricity

ADC Challenges Tinubu on Electricity Commitment Ahead of Re-Election

ABUJA – The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to explain his unfulfilled promise regarding electricity supply, asserting that he should not pursue re-election without delivering on this commitment.

The ADC-PCC reminded the public of Tinubu’s statement during the 2023 presidential campaign, where he asserted that voters should not support him for a second term if he failed to improve electricity services. The council criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for attempting to reinterpret those remarks.

In a statement released by its Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, the ADC-PCC reacted to comments made by Dele Alake, spokesperson for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, who defended the President’s record on electricity.

“Don’t vote for me for a second term if I fail to deliver electricity,” Tinubu had declared to Nigerians during the campaign.

Despite Tinubu’s assurances, the ADC-PCC noted that more than three years later, Nigerians continue to face persistent power outages, national grid failures, and inadequate electricity supply.

The council accused the current administration of exacerbating consumers’ financial burdens through increased electricity bills and discriminatory tariff structures while failing to deliver on the previously advertised Presidential Metering Initiative.

Businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector, have reportedly resorted to rationing electricity by turning off power for guests during daylight hours to manage operational costs.

The ADC-PCC dismissed the administration’s reliance on the Electricity Act and bond programs, arguing that policy documents cannot replace actual electricity provision.

“An Act is not electricity. A bond prospectus does not power homes and factories. What Nigerians need is reliable electricity, not more explanations and publicity,” the statement read.

The council further criticized the imposition of higher tariffs without a reliable supply, leaving households, manufacturers, and small businesses struggling with increased operational expenses. It also questioned the implementation of the Presidential Metering Initiative, claiming that electricity distribution companies continue to issue estimated bills.

“The President’s condition for seeking a second term is clear: deliver electricity or do not ask Nigerians for another mandate,” the ADC-PCC said.

The council urged the APC to confront the President’s 2023 commitment rather than attempt to downplay it, warning that Tinubu’s electricity record will be a significant factor as voters prepare to decide on the President’s re-election in the January 16, 2027 election.
