Nigerian Army raises alarm over attempted cyber breach of X account

The Nigerian Army reported an attempted cyberattack on its official X account on Saturday, leading to the implementation of security measures to prevent unauthorized access.

Col. Appolonia Anele, acting director of Army Public Relations, confirmed the attempted breach in a statement released in Abuja. The incident reportedly occurred around 5 p.m., and the Army is treating it as a cybersecurity issue.

In response, technical and protective measures were rapidly deployed to secure the account and thwart any further attempts at compromise.

“The Nigerian Army assures the public, the media, and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account,” Anele stated.

She urged the public and media to disregard any suspicious or unverified content posted through the account, emphasizing that such material should not be considered the official stance of the Nigerian Army.

Anele encouraged individuals and media organizations to refer to the Army’s verified communication channels for official information during the ongoing investigation into the incident.

She also reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to maintaining information integrity, operational security, and responsible strategic communication. Anele expressed gratitude to the public for their vigilance and understanding, adding that further updates would be provided as necessary.
