Abia LGA Chairmen’s tenure won’t terminate in November 2026 – Governor Otti
Abia State Governor Alex Otti clarified on Thursday that the terms of the current chairmen and councillors in the state’s 17 local government areas will conclude in 2028, contrary to widespread speculation suggesting a November 2026 end date.
During a media chat with residents of Abia, the governor addressed concerns regarding the tenure of local government executives. He noted that the local government law had been amended by the Abia State House of Assembly, which extended the terms of elected officials from two years to four.
“The Assembly approved the amendment to grant local government mayors and their councillors four years before the elections,” Otti explained.

In response to ongoing discussions about the Abia State anti-open grazing law, Otti stated that he is currently reviewing the legislation and will soon outline the framework for its enforcement.
Additionally, the governor expressed concern over the increasing incidence of cancer, kidney failure, brain tumors, and strokes among young Nigerians. He urged residents of Abia to adopt preventive measures and be cautious about their dietary choices.
