Lagos govt targets Ajah-Lekki businesses, markets over waste management violations

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has initiated plans to enforce compliance measures against various markets, commercial establishments, and institutional facilities along the Ajah-Lekki corridor for ongoing violations of waste management and environmental regulations.

Mukaila Sanusi, LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, made this announcement in a statement on Sunday. He quoted Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, noting that several facilities had been identified for enforcement action due to persistent non-compliance with waste management guidelines.

Facilities cited for potential enforcement include Kodak Moment, Bayrock Lifestyle, Caelum Nigeria Ltd, Alpha Pharmacy, Amazon Farm, Ramayaa Mall, Simply Africa Place, Aries Safia, Wolly Mall, Delightful Toy Shop, New Creation Church, The Logic Church, Dow Eye Clinic, Time Oak Hotel, L OMP, Furniture House, Fashion Design Factory, De Phantom Hotel, Elizade Motors, Trinity, Living Faith Church, Premium Rentals, Christ Chapel Church, and QMB Mart.

Gbadegesin emphasized that these establishments had previously been monitored and engaged in discussions aimed at encouraging compliance. However, he stated that LAWMA would resort to enforcement measures if violations continued.

“We have continued to engage and monitor facilities to secure compliance, but where establishments continue to default after being given the opportunity to comply, we will take the necessary enforcement measures,” Gbadegesin said. “Our responsibility is to ensure that commercial activities do not compromise proper waste management or the right of residents to a clean and orderly environment.”

The LAWMA chief executive affirmed the authority’s commitment to combining stakeholder engagement with effective waste management services and strict actions against persistent offenders. He urged all businesses, markets, institutions, and residents in the corridor to meet their waste management obligations and collaborate with enforcement personnel.

Gbadegesin underscored the importance of consistent compliance, stating it is essential to mitigate indiscriminate waste disposal, protect public spaces, and maintain a cleaner environment across Lagos.

He reiterated LAWMA’s commitment to ongoing monitoring and community engagement as part of its efforts to enhance environmental compliance throughout the state.

This announcement follows a monitoring and enforcement operation conducted on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, by LAWMA’s Project WISE team in collaboration with personnel from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), the military, and the Nigeria Police Force.

During this operation, the enforcement team addressed issues in the Eleganza and Issa Imamu Market areas of Ajah. At Eleganza, they dismantled illegal structures erected by traders in road corridors and pedestrian walkways, which hindered the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Furthermore, the Issa Imamu Market was sealed due to ongoing indiscriminate dumping of refuse along the roadway.

LAWMA stated that these actions are part of broader efforts to improve waste management practices and ensure compliance with environmental regulations across Lagos State.
