Probe Borno commissioner for threatening voters, opposition supporters — Amnesty tells security forces

Amnesty International has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into a video that has garnered significant attention, purportedly featuring Sainna Buba, the Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development. The video allegedly shows Buba making threats against political opponents and supporters of opposition parties.

According to Amnesty International, Buba’s remarks, suggesting that those who do not support his political party would be “flogged,” are both unlawful and unacceptable in a democratic society. The organization emphasized that such claims undermine the core principles of democracy, which should protect citizens from punitive measures based on their political affiliations.

In an official statement shared on its verified Facebook account, Amnesty International insisted that authorities must act swiftly to investigate the commissioner’s comments and ensure accountability for any threats made towards political adversaries. The organization denounced the remarks as “reckless and irresponsible” and highlighted the importance of safeguarding citizens’ rights to support their chosen political parties without fear of reprisal.

Amnesty pointed out that these alleged statements, reportedly made on August 29, 2026, breach the rights of Nigerians to freely select and back political parties—a right entrenched in Nigeria’s Constitution, the Electoral Act, and international law. The organization also noted the increasing political tensions in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, warning that such threats and intimidation could foster a hostile environment detrimental to democratic discourse.

“Elections are not warfare, and those who choose to support opposition parties are not the enemy,” Amnesty International stated. It urged political entities and leaders to denounce any rhetoric that encourages hatred or violence.

Furthermore, Amnesty called on Nigerian officials to take decisive action against impunity by launching a credible investigation into the alleged threats made by Buba. This incident follows a recent case involving Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, who was accused by Amnesty International of making similar comments that pressured opposition supporters to vote for the ruling party or leave the community. Shekwolo has contended that his remarks were misinterpreted.
