Nigerian woman arrested in India with cocaine worth N41m
Indian officials have arrested a Nigerian woman, Imyunel Joy, in Indore after recovering approximately 57.18 grams of cocaine valued at over ₹29 lakh (around ₦40.99 million).
According to The Times of India, Joy, a resident of Lagos, was apprehended on Saturday during a police operation in the Sinhasa IT Park area. She had been living in Bandra East, Mumbai.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Dishesh Agarwal stated that officers monitoring crowded locations amid the Raksha Bandhan celebrations observed Joy carrying a black bag, which raised their suspicions.
Upon stopping Joy for questioning, police noted that her responses were unsatisfactory, prompting them to conduct a search of her bag. This search reportedly uncovered a transparent pouch containing cocaine, along with a mobile phone.
Authorities have filed a case against Joy at the Chandan Nagar police station, charging her under Sections 8 and 21 of India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
During interrogation, Joy reportedly claimed that she purchased the cocaine at a lower price with the intention of selling it in Indore at a profit.
Joy has been remanded in custody as investigators seek information about her supplier, potential buyers, and connections to a broader drug network.
As a foreign national, officials are also reviewing her passport, visa, immigration status, and the details surrounding her stay in India.
