Family wealth drama: Davido faces backslash for attacking Erigga

Afrobeats artist Davido is facing backlash after he criticized fellow musician Erigga for remarks regarding wealth in the music industry.
On Wednesday, Erigga acknowledged the efforts of artists who have succeeded without financial support from their families. In a post on social media platform X, he wrote, “Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and have to grind for every single dollar they earn.”
In a response to Erigga’s post, Davido—who hails from a wealthy family—defended artists who come from privileged backgrounds. In a message written in Pidgin English, he took aim at Erigga, saying, “No be we say make your pops no guard o. Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top. Comot here with that your useless motivation. Imbecile.”
The exchange prompted a flurry of comments from social media users, many of whom accused Davido of insecurity. Critiques of his response ranged from perceptions of low self-esteem to accusations of unnecessarily causing drama.
One user, @HonitelHQ, remarked, “You have a very low self-esteem and it is really pathetic. There is no place in that tweet where he mentioned your name.” Another user, @adelambo, added, “He didn’t mention your name or make any references at anyone; he was just giving encouragement to people without any support.”
However, some fans defended Davido, expressing concern over what they viewed as excessive drama on social media. User @BoiiSavi noted, “I’m your fan, but sometimes you go too extreme; why insult him?”
Despite the contentious exchange, Erigga appeared unfazed, continuing to promote positivity in his posts. The incident highlights ongoing discussions within the Nigerian music scene regarding privilege, merit, and the challenges of navigating fame.
