‘I Make Movies For Deep Thinkers’

Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has addressed recent criticism regarding his latest project, “Anikulapo Series 2: The Ghoul Awakens,” emphasizing that his films are crafted for audiences who appreciate nuanced storytelling.
In a video shared on his Instagram account on February 10, 2026, Afolayan responded to early reviews that surfaced following the release of the new season. He acknowledged that not everyone may resonate with his filmmaking style, noting that he aims to engage viewers who are willing to invest time and thought into the narratives.
Afolayan, recognized for previous works such as “Irapada” and “The Figurine,” reflected on the initial backlash those films also encountered upon their respective releases. He pointed out that over time, both films garnered acclaim beyond Nigeria and received international awards, suggesting that “Anikulapo Season 2” might follow a similar trajectory.
He likened audience reactions to his series to the viewership of prominent global shows like “Game of Thrones,” where it often takes several episodes for viewers to fully grasp complex storylines. Afolayan explained that the new season introduces a variety of fresh characters and plot twists that may require patience for full appreciation.
Despite the mixed reception, he highlighted positive feedback from academics and serious cinephiles regarding the project. While acknowledging that not all viewers will connect with the story, Afolayan expressed gratitude to those who understand and support his creative vision.
“I don’t make films to please everybody. I make films for people who are willing to think deeply and follow the story,” he stated. “You can’t judge a layered story after one episode because some stories require patience. I appreciate those who understand my style of storytelling. Not everyone will connect with it, and that’s fine.”
“The Ghoul Awakens” is currently streaming on Netflix in over 100 countries.
