53-year-old Lagos woman jailed for dumping refuse in drain

A 53-year-old woman has been sentenced to one month in prison for illegally disposing of waste in a drainage channel in Lagos State. Nelly Monday was arrested in the Meiran area on September 9, 2026, after authorities observed her dumping refuse during a rainfall.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) announced Monday’s conviction on Thursday, stating that she was arraigned before the Magistrate Court at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the charges.
In a statement, LAWMA emphasized the seriousness of the offense, calling it an environmental violation that could disrupt drainage systems and contribute to flooding. The authority affirmed its commitment to enforcing waste disposal laws throughout the state.
“The Authority will continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos,” the statement read. Residents were reminded of the importance of proper waste disposal and were urged to utilize approved channels to avoid penalties.
This conviction is part of a broader initiative by the Lagos State Government and environmental agencies to address the issue of indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly practices that block drainage systems and heighten the risk of flooding. LAWMA reiterated its call for responsible waste management among residents.
