Niger: Police confirm IED found at New Bussa General Hospital

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) at the General Hospital in New Bussa, located in the Borgu Local Government Area.
The device was found on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, around 11:20 a.m. A security personnel identified the device and promptly alerted local law enforcement.
Following the report, the police deployed Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives to the scene, according to the police command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun. The EOD operatives rendered the device safe, conducted a sweep of the hospital premises, and secured the device for further investigation.
Witnesses reported that the discovery caused a level of panic among hospital staff and visitors. One insider noted that military and police presence increased around the facility. Only patients and a limited number of their relatives were permitted to enter the hospital during the incident, while the general public was restricted from accessing the area.
The police have stated that the situation has been brought under control and security measures around the hospital have been enhanced. Authorities confirmed that normal operations have since resumed.
Details regarding the individual or group responsible for planting the device, as well as the motive behind the incident, have not been disclosed by the police.
