FG secures fresh Chinese investments to tackle Nigeria’s power crisis

Nigerian Government Secures Chinese Investment for Power Sector

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, announced that the federal government has secured new investment commitments from Chinese firms to tackle ongoing challenges in the country’s power sector.

In a statement released on Thursday by Adeola Labzy, the minister’s spokesperson, this development followed Tegbe’s conclusion of a series of high-level discussions with prominent Chinese power engineering companies and financial institutions in Beijing.

These investment commitments are expected to expedite the implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) projects, aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.

“The engagements, which took place during the ongoing Nigeria–China power sector mission, were centered on a key objective: assessing whether each partnership could materialize into bankable projects, financed investments, and completed infrastructure that Nigerians can quantify by megawatts delivered, kilometers of lines energized, and hours of reliable supply,” the statement read.

Additionally, the minister emphasized the importance of adhering to strict and accelerated timelines for all ongoing PPI projects. He advocated for a transition from traditional engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts towards full-scope partnerships within Nigeria.

Despite these efforts, a significant portion of the Nigerian population continues to experience electricity shortages. According to data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, many Nigerians still lack access to reliable power supply.
