Benue Police Repel Armed Bandit Attack in Ayilamo Community

The Benue State Police Command successfully thwarted an armed bandit attack in the Ayilamo community located in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State on Friday evening.

According to a statement from the police, the assault occurred around 6:12 p.m. when a large group of suspected armed bandits invaded the community. Police spokesman DSP Orchia Aondogwu reported that police units, including the Police Mobile Force and tactical teams, swiftly responded to the incident.

The ensuing engagement lasted approximately seven hours, during which police operatives successfully repelled the attackers, forcing them to retreat into the nearby forest. The operation concluded in the early hours of September 11, 2026.

Tragically, Aondogwu confirmed that four police officers lost their lives during the conflict. Their bodies were recovered in subsequent search and rescue efforts in the surrounding area. Additionally, the remains of seven civilians were also found and have been transported to a mortuary for further procedures.

The Commissioner of Police for Benue State, CP Cletus C. N. Nwadiogbu, commended the bravery and determination displayed by the officers during the defense of the community. He expressed his condolences to the families of both the deceased officers and civilians, assuring them of the command’s shared sorrow and unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

In response to the attack, additional tactical teams have been deployed to enhance security in the affected area. The Benue State Police Command is collaborating with other security agencies to bolster efforts to maintain safety and security for residents.

The police urged members of the public to remain calm and vigilant, encouraging cooperation with security forces to provide timely information that could assist ongoing operations.
